Sara L. Shudofsky
Counsel
Sara L. Shudofsky has been litigating complex civil cases in federal court for more than fifteen years. Her practice at the Firm follows a distinguished career handling a wide-ranging docket of cases in the Civil Division of the United States Attorney's Office for the Southern District of New York, where she served as Chief of the Civil Rights Unit, Deputy Chief of the Civil Division, and Chief Appellate Attorney for the Civil Division.
Ms. Shudofsky has extensive litigation experience at both the trial and appellate court levels. She has tried cases before both juries and the bench, in tax, bankruptcy, tort, civil rights, and environmental matters. She has litigated in the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit on behalf of appellants, appellees, and amici, across a broad range of substantive areas and in connection with regulatory challenges, constitutional claims, and issues of statutory interpretation.
Among other favorable results, Ms. Shudofsky obtained reinstatement by the Second Circuit of a jury verdict in a civil rights lawsuit after dismissal of the case by the district court following a two-month trial. She also successfully defended, before the Second Circuit sitting en banc, the provisions of a prisoner litigation reform statute following an adverse decision by the three-judge panel. During her tenure in the government, Ms. Shudofsky was involved in numerous high-profile matters, including the federal government's review of the Amadou Diallo shooting; the first jury trial in the country of a case brought by the United States under the Freedom of Access to Clinic Entrances Act, which culminated in verdicts against all ten defendants; and litigation against the New York Yankees in the first case ever brought by the United States against a professional sports franchise under the Americans with Disabilities Act, resulting in a landmark settlement agreement making Yankee Stadium accessible to people with disabilities.
Ms. Shudofsky has received many awards for her work, including the Henry L. Stimson Medal, presented by the Bar Association of the City of New York, and the New York County Lawyers' Association's Public Service Award. Her practice at the Firm focuses on complex commercial civil litigation. |
